Chapter Five

“Calm down, Ryker, we’ll figure this out,” Anton said to his son’s back as Ryker stared out the window, his face feeling stiff and cold, much like his stupid heart.

Ryker, along with Anton and Lucretia, had been watching a newsvid of the Scythian king and his fiancé that Anton had dug up from somewhere. Anton had brought it in, but then warned Ryker not to watch it.

“This was made a couple of days ago, but son…you may not want to see this…”

“What are you talking about? If Lex is on there, then of course I want to see it.” Ryker snatched the small plastic chip from Anton’s hand and put it in the holograph machine in Anton’s living quarters. Anton had somehow secured his mother’s release—Ryker had long since stopped being amazed at how his father seemed to be able to get most anything he wanted—and brought both Ryker and his mother to his large home in the capital city of Bresov. Ryker had wanted to leave immediately for Scythia, but Anton had talked him into waiting to see exactly what they’d be up against. Now they’d had word that the wedding would actually take place on Lycanus itself.

The hologram screen appeared in front of them, and they were listening to an Earthan news announcer, while watching a long shot of a large white palace, presumably on Scythia.

“Large crowds were on hand today on the streets of the capital city of Lamria as King Gareth of Scythia introduced the man who will be his new consort to his people.” The cameras zoomed in to a carriage, in which two shadowy figures could be seen waving to crowds lining the street. “Lex Colombo, an Earthan citizen and the son of the Vice-Consul of the Earthan Alliance of Planets, Luther Colombo, was taken by the king first to the Scythian temples for the blessings of the priestesses and then down the long boulevard called the King’s Way to the palace itself to greet the crowds. They’ll be leaving soon for their ceremony, which will take place on Lycanus.”

The scene shifted to a balcony with a tall, blond man waving regally. He was probably of middle age, still handsome, and dressed in a red uniform with gold braids looping over his shoulders. His arm was around the waist of a slightly shorter young man with curly brown hair, dressed more soberly in black—Lex, leaning into the taller man was smiling broadly, his face just the same as ever, thank the gods, with no lingering effects from the beating he’d taken. He was seemingly happy and relaxed. He glanced up at the tall man next to him, who bent his head for a kiss, much to the crowd’s delight.

It was undeniably Lex being kissed so soundly and possessively by the king, despite the graininess of the obviously telescopic lens the photographer had been using. Scythian technology was pretty far behind Earth’s, or even Venuvia’s, for that matter, but Ryker would know Lex anywhere. The announcer continued, his cheery voice beginning to grate on Ryker’s nerves.
